New Range Rover Sport: Powerful redesign with lots of options

The mid-size Range Rover Sport SUV, the most popular vehicle for U.S. buyers in the Land Rover lineup, has a totally new look and lots of new options for 2023. It's boxier and yet smoother with a 3-in.-longer wheelbase, and it comes in an all-new 523-hp V8 Twin Turbo variant that is a real beast in disguise.

The new lineup includes two six-cylinder Ingenium gasoline engines featuring mild hybrid technology, an extended Electric Hybrid, and the all-new V8. An all-electric version is planned for 2024.

The Range Rover Sport is available in four variants: P360 355-hp SE 48-V mild hybrid straight six, P400 395-hp SE Dynamic 48-V mild hybrid straight six, P440e 434-hp plug-in hybrid Autobiography spec with an all-electric range of 48 miles, and P530 523-hp V8 Twin Turbo First Edition. The V8 will do 0 to 60 in 4.3 sec with Dynamic Launch engaged. All new Range Rover Sport models are fitted with an eight-speed ZF automatic transmission and Intelligent All-Wheel Drive.

The redesign features short overhangs, an assertive front end, and steeply raked glazing at the front and back. The sculpted exterior is detailed with exquisite finishes such as a stealth-like front grille and Premium LED lighting units. The clean lines of the exterior are enhanced by flush glazing and door handles, a hidden waist rail finisher, and laser-welded roof. In the rear, there's a sculpted tailgate with a full-width feature bearing the Range Rover script. It rides on 21-in. wheels, with a 23-in. option available.

The new Range Rover Sport introduces more advanced chassis technologies than ever before. The inherent stiffness and strength of the flexible mixed-metal architecture (MLA-Flex), which provides up to 35% higher torsional stiffness than the previous Range Rover Sport, lays the foundations for this technology. It works harmoniously with a suite of systems governed by the Integrated Chassis Control system.

Unique to First Edition, the Dynamic Response Pro helps provide roll control via a 48-V electronic active roll-control system that is capable of applying up to 1,000 ft-lb of torque across each axle. It works hand in hand with the latest-generation Dynamic Air Suspension, which introduces switchable-volume air springs for the first time.

Dynamic Air Suspension is fitted to every new Range Rover Sport and the intelligent system enhances the bandwidth of the suspension. This works by varying the pressure within the chambers (higher pressure provides stiffer damping) to deliver traditional Range Rover comfort with the dynamic handling expected from the Range Rover Sport. To optimize responses, the vehicle monitors the road ahead using eHorizon navigation data to pre-emptively prime for upcoming bends in the road.

The Range Rover Sport's cornering agility is taken to a new level with All-Wheel Steering, Torque Vectoring by Braking, and the Electronic Active Differential. All-Wheel Steering provides rear-wheel steering of up to 7.3 degrees out of phase with the front wheels to achieve enhanced agility and maneuverability at low speeds, while turning in phase for enhanced stability at high speeds. This gives the SUV the turning circle of a hatchback and the on-road agility of a much smaller car.

Enhancing the off-road performance is Land Rover's latest Terrain Response system, which intelligently applies the most appropriate settings for the terrain. New Adaptive Off-Road Cruise Control makes its debut on the Range Rover Sport and helps drivers navigate tricky terrain.

Inside, the Range Rover Sport is all no-nonsense luxury. Innovative and sustainable material choices include tactile and lightweight Ultrafabrics, premium textiles finished in attractive new Duo Tone colorways, and a unique textile option that extends to the dashboard and door detailing. Alternatives include luxurious Windsor or soft Semi-Aniline leather options.

Other interior standouts include the 22-way adjustable, heated, and ventilated electric memory front seats with massage function and winged headrests, 13.1-in. Pivi Pro curved central touchscreen, Cabin Air Purification Pro system, Powerful Meridian audio systems that include the 29-speaker Meridian Signature Sound System (the most advanced audio system ever fitted to a Range Rover Sport), and Active Noise Cancellation. Other neat features are Deployable Door Handles with Proximity Sensing, Soft Door Close, and Approach Unlock.

The new Range Rover Sport's dynamic performance is supported by the latest driver-focused Advanced Driver Assistance Systems. All models are fitted with Emergency Braking, 3D Surround Camera (including front and rear parking sensors), Cruise Control, Driver Condition Monitor, Lane Keep Assist, Traffic Sign Recognition, and more.

Pricing starts at $83,000 for the SE, $90,000 for SE Dynamic, $104,200 for the Autobiography, and $121,500 for the First Edition.
